About the Industry

The Marine Transport Industry is made up of commercial passenger/ non passenger ships generally up to 45 meters in length who operate in Restricted Limits around New Zealand.

There are approximately 2500 vessels comprising Ferries, Passenger Charter Boats, Fishing Charter Boats,Charter Yachts Aquaculture vessels, and Tug Boats and Barges.

The Marine Transport Act is the principal legislation that controls the activities of theses vessels and that is administered by Maritime New Zealand. That organisation makes the rules in conjunction with consultation with the industry and the MTA is a major contributor to that process.

Maritime NZ recognise the MTA as the principal industry organisation and accordingly consult with them on all marine related issues.
